Inherited slow metabolism
Research has proven that obesity is linked to genetic inheritance. Thus, body weight can be influenced by genetic factors such as inherited slow combustion mechanism, endocrine factors, increased fat deposition, etc.
Hormone sensitive metabolism
Puberty, contraceptives, pregnancy, hysterectomy, fertility treatments or hormone replacement treatment often results in unwanted weight gain.
Low leptin levels
Leptin is a circulating protein hormone produced by the fat cells. Leptin regulates food intake by binding to specific receptors in the brain and thereby regulates neuroendocrine function and energy intake and expenditure. A deficiency of Leptin is associated with obesity. Patients with high leptin levels can eat almost anything without gaining weight. Patients with low Leptin levels suffer from an increased appetite, and everything that they eat is metabolised and stored as fat.
Causes of low leptin levels include genetic factors, hormonal treatment, medication such as cortisone, antibiotics and antidepressants, viral infection, emotional trauma and stress, anaesthetics and compulsive eating habits.
Some people overload their metabolism to such an extent that their body cannot burn the energy the excess food provides fast enough, resulting in the excess energy being stored as fat. When this happens on a regular basis, the brain’s ability to differentiate between hunger and cravings is diminished. Eventually it becomes extremely difficult to resist any craving for food, and this leads to the vicious cycle of obesity.
Risks associated with obesity
Obesity is recognised as one of the most common diseases in the world. The term “disease” is perfectly justified, since obesity can lead to a variety of illnesses and even premature death due to a multitude of causes. Weight-loss is therefore critical to the health of those suffering from obesity.
Morbidity refers to poor health due to any cause, while mortality refers to the number of deaths in a given population. Obesity influences both morbidity and mortality. Statistics have shown that overweight persons are 50% more likely to succumb to disease than other people of the same age group.
Obesity causes an extraordinary burden on the heart function and eventually leads to heart failure.
Coronary artery disease
The majority of obese patients also suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis and/or poor circulation, all which could result in a heart attack or a stroke.
Obesity is an important cause for Diabetes type 2.
The increased burden on the lungs to supply adequate amounts of oxygen to the tissues, as well as the decreased ability of the lungs to move and thus properly function within a obese patient, leads to lung disease and heart failure.
Spinal; vertebrae, hips, knees and ankles frequently show the effects of obesity
This frequently occurs in obese women and may lead to infertility.
Complications during pregnancy
It is known that obesity is one of the primary causes of complications during child birth.
